Balch Springs deliberates scaling back tree lighting after previous $100,000 cost

Staff proposed scaling the city’s large holiday tree lighting back into a smaller council‑night event to reduce the city’s expense while retaining a festive experience; staff estimated a reduced event would cost less than $60,000 versus prior years near $100,000.

“It would be less than 60,000,” the staff presenter said when asked about the scaled‑down event budget. Another staff speaker noted that recent years’ events had approached $100,000 because of lighting, vendors and overtime. Council members and residents said the event draws people to the city and boosts identity; others suggested pursuing sponsorships and partnerships to reduce cost.

Council and staff discussed options including changing the scale of vendors and entertainment, partnering with neighboring cities, seeking sponsorships for decorations and lighting and moving some elements to regular council meetings. No formal vote or budget adjustment took place; staff said they would “stand by” on the final format while exploring ways to keep the event’s impact at lower cost.

The tree‑lighting conversation was part of a broader discussion about prioritizing events, using EDC Type B dollars selectively and aligning parks and tourism efforts under a strategic plan.
