Board pulls several language‑support appointments from resolution after members raise access concerns

A proposed slate of staffing changes tied to language‑support roles became the meeting’s most contested resolution on Aug. 27.

Commissioner Santiago asked directly about the impact of abolishing certain homeschool‑assistant positions and whether families who rely on Arabic, Dari/Pashto, Burmese and Swahili supports would still have access. "To get people, 1, to speak these languages and also, 2, to be certified in education spaces, actually, it's pretty hard," Santiago said, urging caution before removing positions.

Administration reviewed current allocations and told the board the district would retain a set of language supports and that the proposed resolution could be modified. Dr. Rosser and Chiefs explained that, after checking internal records, the district would still have, for example, four homeschool assistants who speak Arabic, three for Dari/Pashto, one Somali and three Swahili after the proposed changes. Given lingering concerns and requests for a fuller analysis, President Simmons and Commissioners agreed to modify Resolution 1‑63 to remove items 1–5 and to ask the administration to return with detailed, building‑level staffing counts and a plan for responding to increased demand or new arrivals.
