Arvada planners outline comprehensive-plan update after multi-event outreach

City planning staff and consultants presented a community-engagement recap and the framing for Arvada's comprehensive-plan update at a joint council/planning-commission workshop on Aug. 25.

"My name is Chris Sandeen. I'm one of the senior planners here with the city," said Chris Sandeen as he introduced the team and described the outreach to date. Staff said Phase 1 engagement has included 13 events, roughly 30 hours per staff participant, about 685 participants overall and about 250 sign-ups for ongoing notifications, with notices reaching readers of the Arvada Report (the team cited circulation figures of roughly 62,000).

Presenters said the comp plan will be an aspirational, 20-year guiding document focused on land-use and housing attainability, with later phases addressing specific scenarios and implementation steps. Jessica Garner, the city director introduced by staff, told the council the process will include a community advisory group and additional public events, including a youth engagement day planned for Sept. 23.

Consultants emphasized that the comp plan will knit together existing sub-area plans and other long-range documents rather than duplicate them, and staff pledged to identify areas where the comp plan and the land development code conflict and recommend follow-up steps. The council and planning commission will continue monthly briefings and public engagement through the drafting process.
