County weighs assistance for Miles after storm sewer collapse; initial estimate $30,000

County engineering staff told the board they inspected a collapsed 24‑inch clay storm sewer under Ferry Road (500 Avenue) inside the City of Miles and estimated the repair — replacing the inlet‑to‑inlet crossing with reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and asphalt patching — would cost roughly $30,000 including contingency.

"About $30,000, and I include some contingency," the engineer said when asked for a ballpark figure. Supervisors discussed whether the county should pay for the repair and recoup costs by withholding the city's FM extension funds until reimbursed, whether to arrange a contract with a local contractor or use county crews, and whether the City of Miles might qualify for RCTP funding next year.

Board members asked staff to gather more information on Miles' recent RCTP awards, local FM balances, and whether an emergency repair would materially raise costs. No funding commitment was made; supervisors directed staff to return with options and a recommended payback schedule so the board can decide once more financial details are available.
