Select Board raises liability, emergency-access concerns for Glidden Bridge

The Jefferson Select Board on June 30 discussed public-safety risks posed by weight restrictions on the Glidden Bridge and what liability the town may face if emergency vehicles cannot cross.

Lynne reported that the Fire Department "has reached out to the State several times but hasn't received a response," and the board asked Pam to contact Maine Municipal Legal to clarify whether responsibility or liability would fall to the town when vehicles exceed posted weight limits or when a fire is inaccessible because of bridge limits. Emergency Management Agent Alexander Ciskowski told the board the town's 2026 Hazard Survey renewal — paperwork that requires the board's signatures — helps Jefferson remain eligible for funds that could be used for culvert or bridge repairs affecting emergency access between the Glidden Bridge and the nearby Somerville Bridge.

The board did not set a repair timeline during the meeting. Pamela Grotton said the town will seek legal guidance to clarify responsibility, and Alexander Ciskowski will submit the finalized Hazard Survey so the town retains eligibility for state or federal assistance.
