Erie advisory board urges keeping members in appointment process

Karen Winkler, chair of the Erie Sustainability Advisory Board, opened discussion of recent council proposals that could change how advisory-board appointments are handled and urged the board to retain a voice in the process. She said the council had discussed options ranging from council-led selection to hybrid approaches that rely on liaison task forces, and invited the board’s newer members to describe their experience applying.

"I think every board is a little bit different on what kind of experience you need," Winkler said, urging the board to keep the recommendation role because it allows members to review applicants' fit beyond resume items. Several members supported refining the town application to include clearer questions and a checkbox or invitation to attend a meeting so candidates understand the commitment before applying.

Board members said they had been surprised by past applicants who expected a different role and that standardized, board-specific application questions could reduce mismatches. The board agreed to compile feedback for town council and staff, with Winkler offering to gather comments and forward them for consideration.
