Isanti County declares K-9 Maverick surplus, approves transfer to handler for $1

The Isanti County Board voted unanimously to declare K-9 Maverick surplus county property and transfer him to his handler for a nominal payment of $1, permitting the dog to retire with the Fisher family.

Chief Deputy John Quit Gilchrist introduced the retirement request and said staff wanted to retire Maverick before further injury: “He is going to be turning 9… His hips are tightening up a little bit and we just felt… it’s a good time to retire Maverick before he injures himself,” he said. County legal counsel recommended the surplus-property approach and proposed the $1 nominal transfer as the legally appropriate mechanism.

Sergeant Van der Bette recounted multiple deployments that illustrated Maverick’s operational value, including a Cambridge call where the dog tracked a suspect following a gunshot and helped make the scene safer for officers. “We picked up a track… I just dropped the leash and let Maverick do his job,” the sergeant said, describing an apprehension that led to custody without serious injuries. Commissioners and staff praised Maverick’s service and approved the motion to transfer ownership to Deputy Fisher by voice vote.

The transfer motion formalizes a long-standing local practice of retiring detection/apprehension canines to their handlers under a nominal transfer; the board treated the step as both an operational and humane outcome, allowing the dog to live with the handler and family going forward.
