Committee previews AI guidance: staff to present administrative rules for generative-AI use

The committee previewed Policy 815 and a forthcoming administrative regulation addressing appropriate use of technology and generative AI. Staff said the policy adds a delegation authorizing the superintendent to implement generative‑AI guidelines to support instruction, administrative efficiency and student learning; two ARs (815 AR and 815‑11 AR) will provide the operational detail.

"The superintendent is authorized to implement generative AI guidelines that support effective instruction, administrative efficiency, and student learning," the staff member said, describing why the policy delegates implementation to administration. Committee members asked whether the AR will address student plagiarism and staff use for lesson plans; staff replied the AR will include sections for students and staff, specify consequences for misuse and outline an approval process for staff tools, while emphasizing that AI should not replace human judgment.

A committee member asked for clear public communication at a regular board meeting explaining why the AI rules will be issued as ARs rather than as a formal policy vote so the public understands the difference. Staff affirmed they will present the ARs next month for committee review.
