Planners fold airport height zones and permit rules into code for public access

Polk County staff presented and the commission approved LDCT-2026-10, a code amendment that incorporates existing airport permit, notice and height-zone rules into the county's land development code to make them more accessible to the public.

A staff presenter explained the amendment is county-initiated and aims to improve consistency between the land development code and the county's airport zoning regulations; "These amendments do not create any new regulations," the planner said. Eric Peterson of the land development division added that the airport zoning provisions had been adopted by reference by the board and the Joint Airport Zoning Board in 2019 but were not placed in the ADA-accessible municipal code, and moving them into the code will make the rules easier for the public to find and use.

Commissioners asked if the Joint Airport Zoning Board had reviewed the changes; staff said the board had adopted the regulations previously and staff had coordinated with the airport authority. No public commenters spoke; the commission approved the text amendment on a unanimous vote.
