Historic commission discusses streamlining demolition reviews for mid‑century houses

Chair Diane Rochelle listed recent demolition-delay reviews and the number of "no delay" determinations she signed since January, noting that many applications concern 1950s subdivision houses with limited architectural distinction. "When we're dating buildings we look at what the bones are," she said, urging clearer criteria and quicker internal processing.

Members proposed amending bylaws to exclude certain cookie-cutter development houses from automatic commission review and discussed practical steps—using shared file storage, daily reminders, or reliance on submitted folders with photographs instead of frequent site visits—to reduce the risk of missing review windows. One commissioner suggested inviting a Cape Cod Commission representative to discuss regional approaches to similar pressures.

The commission agreed to continue work on definitions and process improvements and assigned volunteers to investigate possible county contacts and technology options ahead of the next meeting.
