Fremont County adopts emergency fire restrictions effective June 29

The Fremont County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt Resolution 2026-18, establishing countywide fire restrictions effective 06/29/2026 at 12:00 AM. The measure, moved by Commissioner (speaker 6) and seconded by Commissioner (speaker 3), cites Wyoming statutes 35-9-301 through 35-9-304 as authority to close areas to open fire when danger is extreme.

The county fire warden summarized the rationale for the restriction, saying, "I think it's time for us to consider some fire restrictions for Fremont County itself." He described multiple recent ignitions, unusual root-and-smoldering behavior in vegetation and increased roadside starts, and noted federal partners had already enacted restrictions on some lands. The resolution prohibits open burning of Class A, B or C materials on state and private lands where the county holds an interest, and adds a limited agricultural exception: irrigated agricultural vegetation may be burned if the sheriff's dispatch is notified, a responsible person remains on site with water and suppression means are available, and burning occurs only between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The board directed county staff to post the restriction through state and local channels and asked municipal partners to consider parallel measures. Commissioners also requested outreach so the public understands enforcement expectations, the limited exemptions, and that responsible parties remain liable for damage if a restricted burn spreads. The resolution will remain in place "until further notice of this board," per the adopted language.
