Commissioners debate contractor work vs. in-house shaping for multiple road projects

Commissioners reviewed several road projects—including Middle Creek, Lake Road and the 7 Hills Road intersection—and debated whether to hire outside contractors or use county crews for shaping and chip-seal work. Road staff described current sequencing: base layers to be placed soon, followed by final surfaces when weather permits.

One commissioner said hiring contractors typically yields a better long-term product because they do the work year-round, while another advocated for exploring shaping in-house to reduce costs. “Personally, I think it was a very good option,” one commissioner said in reference to a particular material choice, but others warned moisture and mid-season timing could cause problems. Commissioners instructed staff to reach out to contractors for cost comparisons and agreed to schedule specific projects after confirming mobilization windows and weather risk.

The board also discussed minor capital repairs such as windows and gutters at the Road & Bridge building and potential equipment purchases (mower attachments and LED signage), with commissioners proposing cost-sharing approaches for some items.
