Parents and players dispute canceled game; board questions athletic decision-making

A dispute over a canceled final game prompted sharp exchanges at the Jan. 30 Nespelem School District board meeting. Parents Anna and Val Vargas stood with their sons, student athletes, and said they did not direct coaches to withhold players; the board questioned the athletic director's authority to cancel the game.

Superintendent Effie Dean told the board she had been informed by the athletic director, principal and coach that Anna and Val planned to withhold their boys from the final game, leaving too few players and forcing cancellation. Effie said school leaders believed the withdrawal would have caused insufficient players. Anna and Val disputed that account in open meeting. Chair Jolene Marchand told coaches they “need to be consistent and learn to accept criticism,” while Jarae Cate said coaching is difficult and acknowledged the challenges coaches face.

The board discussed the broader implications for high school sports, noting requirements for late nights, holiday practices and summer conditioning and warning that the district risks being removed from the league without consistent participation standards. No formal disciplinary action was recorded; board members urged clarity around coaching decisions and consistency in athletics administration.
