Historic-district commission approves sign permit for building façade

The Skagway Municipality Historic District Commission voted to approve sign permit application 2026074, allowing painted letters on the building façade at the RSD Properties address in the historic district. An applicant who filed the permit explained the sign design and answered commission questions about color and lettering.

At the meeting the applicant said the sign would feature a white background with painted letters, similar to nearby signs: "The white will be the background for the letters that are painted on," the applicant said. Commissioners asked whether the photo indicated a fade in the lettering; the applicant and the permitting official clarified the letters would be solid block letters. After brief discussion a commissioner moved to find the application consistent with historic-district guidelines and the motion passed unanimously, 3-0.

The commission’s action authorizes the permitting official to issue a certificate of approval. Commissioners discussed broader aesthetic goals for downtown signage and encouraged applicants to avoid repetitive black-on-white treatments when practical.
