Council authorizes construction‑zone speed limit on RM 967 so TxDOT can post reduced limit

Staff explained that TxDOT asked the city to adopt a local ordinance so it can formally change the posted construction-zone speed at the roundabout project on Ranch to Market Road 967. Planning staff said that TxDOT’s record currently shows a 55 mph limit on the segment even though temporary signage has instructed motorists to slow to 35 mph at critical curves, which created confusing messaging for drivers.

"It is officially 55 miles per hour even though there's signage that says please slow down to 35," a staff presenter said, explaining the procedural need to adopt the ordinance so TxDOT can make the temporary construction limit official. Council members asked staff to pursue any further reductions possible in the construction zone — in particular around the curve and where buses and heavy equipment pass — and to confirm the final post-construction speed once the roundabout and Marathon Road tie-in are complete.

By motion, council approved the ordinance on first and final reading; the ordinance takes effect as defined in the adopted language and allows TxDOT to implement the construction speed signs and enforcement during active work.
