Treasurer urges broader CTE plan before launching cosmetology program

Treasurer Powers used the discussion on the cosmetology lab to argue for a larger review of Career & Technical Education (CTE) in Clintondale. He said the board is considering a specialty program before agreeing on the structure and goals of an overall CTE division.

"We are...putting the cart before the proverbial horse," Powers said, urging the board to conduct public hearings, gather data on workforce demand and define what CTE will mean for the district before committing facilities or funds. He described concern that CTE might supplant core academic time if not carefully integrated and asked for a comprehensive study and public comment period.

Several trustees responded that Clintondale has historical CTE programs and that cosmetology can provide credentials, employment pathways and entrepreneurship opportunities. One trustee recounted prior cosmetology, building trades and auto shop programs and said students have used credentials to support college and careers. Vice President Valerio Nook also warned that the grant timeline created urgency and counseled following through to avoid losing funding.

Powers ultimately voted no on the cosmetology addendum but framed his opposition as procedural: he supports CTE objectives broadly but not immediate approval without more planning. The exchange underscored a governance tension between strategic planning and grant-driven timelines.
