Board refers student‑representative policy back to committee after public questions

Public comment and board discussion on Sept. 2 focused on whether proposed Policy 004.1 — governing a student representative to the school board — clearly states qualifications, selection timing and responsibilities. Several public commenters and board members said parts of the policy were ambiguous.

"I'd like to request the policy committee review that policy," parent Matt Soper said, urging clearer language to avoid future confusion about vacancies and residency issues. Board members discussed whether the document should be amended tonight or sent back to committee.

After motions to table and to amend were considered, the board voted to refer Policy 004.1 back to the policy committee for further review rather than adopt it at this meeting. The solicitor explained the parliamentary options for tabling, amending and referring to committee before the board settled on referral.

Why it matters: The student‑representative policy governs how a student is chosen to represent the entire student body and the timing of that representation. Board members said they want the policy to be unambiguous about whether candidates are selected by class or by the whole student body and to clarify when newly elected student representatives may participate in board meetings.

The board will review the policy again after committee work; no final policy was adopted tonight.
