Owners ask Londonderry Selectboard for help preserving former post‑office building

Richard Squires and his wife Diane addressed the board about a large, privately owned former post‑office building they purchased about 25 years ago and for which the postal service has put the lease on hold and moved operations to Londonderry.

"The rafters underneath the floor of the post office itself are weakening," Squires said, describing dampness and the need for an engineer and significant repair work. The couple asked whether the town had ideas for reusing the building — including possible apartment conversions — and whether it might qualify for historic‑preservation funding. They also asked for help identifying contractors to perform occasional maintenance such as lawn care and pressure washing while the building is in interim use.

Board members discussed site constraints, available parcel sizes, and noted the South Village wastewater system might have reserved capacity which could facilitate a hookup if redevelopment were pursued. The board agreed to place follow‑up inquiries on a future agenda and recommended the Squires coordinate with the town administrator about potential resources and next steps.
