Recycling coordinator briefs board on biodigester composter offer from Stratton Mountain

The recycling coordinator told the Select Board that Stratton Mountain has a German biodigester composter in a shipping container and proposed it as a possible solution for the town's food-waste stream.

"It makes compost in 24 to 72 hours," the coordinator said, explaining the unit looks like "a shipping container in their parking lot" that could be dropped into place and plugged in. The coordinator said the machine was sized to handle the food waste from the town transfer station and could reduce trucking fees for compost.

Stratton discussed lease terms in which they would retain ownership and offer the town a low-cost lease ("like a $1 a year lease," according to the recycling coordinator). The unit would require roughly 220-volt power and some water; the coordinator said they will investigate water inputs, permitting and operational needs and bring further information back to the board.

Board members requested additional details on power, water and liability before committing to any arrangement. Staff will research permitting and operational implications and report back.
