Trustee presents draft AI policy; trustees raise privacy and feasibility concerns

Trustee Bill introduced a draft AI and online‑presence document for the library, saying the draft was inspired by Pembroke’s policy and adapted for local use. Bill described it as "kind of more of a basic...how we got to be where we are with these technologies," and asked trustees for feedback and edits.

Trustees focused on a provision that would require staff to review AI‑generated information accessed on library terminals. Chair Lindsay Goodman read the line in the draft: "In recognition of both the opportunities and the challenges of AI, staff will review and validate all AI generated information gathered on the library's own terminals and devices." Bill acknowledged the language felt "a little bit spooky to me, like, over a little bit overdone oversight," and trustees noted practical and privacy problems: "If you start just posting AI content, you will have improper information on the website," said one trustee, while others pointed out staff generally "stay out of other people's business" and that asking staff to validate every patron AI query could be intrusive.

Trustees recommended clarifying the language, aligning any AI‑related disclaimer with the library’s existing linked‑content disclaimer, and distinguishing between library‑curated content and private patron searches. Bill and trustees agreed to incorporate feedback, work with Tavi's existing draft used for performance objectives, and bring a revised version to a future meeting.
