Town officials warn residents: USPS may shift package drop‑off to town hall

Town staff told the Star Valley Ranch Town Council on June 23 that the U.S. Postal Service notified the town it may reclassify the community as a "drop location," which could move delivery of mail and packages to the town mail center and town hall. The change, staff said, could take effect as early as July 1 and affect hundreds of packages daily.

"The United States Postal Service, USPS, recently advised us they're looking at restructuring their organization," staff read from a draft letter the council plans to send to residents. Staff said the town currently receives between about "310 and 510 packages a day on average," and that shift would increase on-site handling and require operational changes.

Council members asked about options including cluster boxes, Amazon drop‑boxes, and hiring staff or contractors to distribute mail into individual mailboxes. Staff said some options — such as cluster boxes — pose winter access and liability concerns and that continuing current third‑party delivery arrangements would require new subcontract language or a town‑level contract. The council noted that taking on regular package handling could require a future budget amendment to cover staffing or equipment costs.

The council plans to send the draft resident letter and continue outreach to postmasters, postal contractors and state or congressional offices while the town evaluates logistics and costs. Staff said they will share further details with residents once the USPS issues final guidance.
