Drew Park concerns pressed; TPO to consider partnering on stadium‑district planning

Harmony McGee (TPO staff) briefed the board that Maritza Estorquiza, chair of the Drew Park Community Advisory Committee, emailed the TAC with requests about the proposed Race Stadium: protect Drew Park tax dollars, safeguard residents and businesses, establish a permanent community voice in the development process, measure impacts before commitments, and put protections in writing. McGee said the CAC had not taken a formal position because the project had not been presented for a committee vote but that the comments were included in the board packet.

Later in new business Commissioner Wessel asked whether the TPO should lead a planning exercise related to the stadium district or serve as a partner. Director Wong recommended that the TPO participate as a partner in a broader study—because transportation concerns intersect with land use and parking decisions—but cautioned that expanding the study region (to include Pinellas and Pasco game‑day travel) could escalate costs; Wong asked staff to meet with Tampa City Council, Hillsborough County Commission and community stakeholders to define scope and potential funding before committing TPO planning funds.

Board members requested follow‑up meetings to identify priorities for what the transportation study should cover and emphasized the need to understand funding commitments before the TPO takes on a lead role.
