Wakefield and Reading launch free on‑demand micro‑transit pilot 'the link'

Dee Casey, Wakefield’s town administrator, opened the ribbon‑cutting and announced the launch of a new on‑demand micro‑transit shuttle service called the link, made possible through funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and operated by Circuit. "I'm excited to stand here with all of you and officially help launch our new micro transit shuttle service," Casey said, thanking town staff and state delegates for their roles in securing the grant support.

Reading town manager Jane Wellman said the pilot is intended to fill long‑standing gaps in mobility and promote dignity and independence for residents who cannot drive. She noted MassDOT has extended support into a second year and framed the link as a tool to help residents reach jobs, health care and local businesses. "Through our partnership with Circuit, the support of MassDOT and the collaboration of our member communities, we are introducing a service that fills long standing gaps," Wellman said.

Local leaders described the link as a regional effort: Wakefield Town Council Chair Jonathan Chines framed it as a step toward restoring once‑common transit connections and thanked state partners for two years of funding. Reading Select Board Chair Melissa Murphy highlighted connections to local health care providers and downtown businesses, and said the program will be free for riders.

Circuit will operate the service and said it will ramp up service over the coming weeks, collect rider feedback, and offer multiple booking options. Officials said the pilot’s aims include improving last‑mile connections, supporting economic development, and expanding access for seniors and residents without cars.
