A senior at Olentangy Orange High School told the board Feb. 5 that existing fNIRS (functional near‑infrared spectroscopy) caps fail users with thick, curly hair and darker skin. He showed a $13.17 prototype cap and described tests showing improved signals, and also presented a $83 breath sensor aimed at low‑cost cancer screening.
The board was told S&P gave the district a triple‑A rating and Moody’s a high rating; staff described auditor guidance on bidding and recommended joining an In Compliance purchasing consortium. The board approved treasurer and superintendent consent slates (minutes, donations, HR items, GMP 1 and consortium membership) and recessed into executive session under Ohio Revised Code §121.22.
District leaders briefed the board on summer programs for 2026: summer school (June 3–July 10; virtual orientation June 2) with 792 registrations last year; SEE enrichment (eight days, multiple sites; $125 per course); and Extended School Year services for about 500 students (IEP‑driven).
The Olentangy Schools board used its Jan. 22 meeting to recognize state‑level student and staff achievements, honor 19 retirees, and approve consent items by unanimous roll call, including a Columbia Gas connection (about $279,000) and FY26 roofing contracts (about $2.4 million).
At its Jan. 22 meeting the Olentangy Schools treasurer outlined a five‑year forecast that shows a projected $16.8 million shortfall this year and declining days‑cash; the board was told an operating levy will likely be needed in 2027 or 2028 unless revenues or spending change.
At its Jan. 8 organizational meeting, the Olentangy Local School District Board elected Brandon Lester as board president and Doctor Elizabeth Janelle Wallach as vice president. Both officers were sworn in and will serve in leadership for 2026.
Superintendent reported that House Bill 114 standardizes kindergarten eligibility across Ohio; for the 2026–27 school year students must be 5 by Aug. 20. Kindergarten registration opens Jan. 12 and the district estimates roughly 46 children could be affected based on last year’s enrollment window.
The Olentangy board approved multiple financial consent items including ACFR/PAFR submissions and the FY26 budget documents. The board also approved contracts for an owner's representative, testing services, and a temporary easement with Delaware County (compensation a little over $2,500) to facilitate roadway widening near Berlin High School.
Students from Berlin High School presented a district pilot of restorative practices, demonstrating an OFN (Observation–Feeling–Need) mediation protocol, a stand-up/sit-down empathy activity, and plans to expand training and professional development across Olentangy schools.
District curriculum staff recommended buying the Vista 'Cheminz' French program after a pilot in which most French teachers favored the product; the purchase would provide teacher class sets and digital access now and begin a three-year contract for 2026–27.
