The Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining met Jan. 22, 2025 in Salt Lake City (with remote participants). Staff updated the board on internal process-improvement workshops, a pending gubernatorial appointment, and an ongoing multiyear effort to modernize oil-and-gas bonding. The board asked staff to present bonding scenarios and historical plugging costs at its Feb. 26 meeting. Division legislative staff reviewed a short watch list of bills (including Senate Bill 34 directing a mineral surety study). The board then handled multiple hearing-examiner dockets, approving several compulsory-pooling orders and noting multiple matters were continued for final orders in February because of publication/notice issues. The board approved an Alton Coal settlement and accepted petitions from SM Energy, Anschutz and UintaWax (several orders will be finalized next month).
