Councilwoman Betty Guardado opened a community backpack distribution event, announcing that organizers had obtained more than 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. She thanked sponsors and volunteers, including labor groups, a corporate sponsor, local utilities, school districts and volunteer hairstylists, and said the event would run until 9 p.m. to serve families ahead of the school year.
