Shagbark Hickory—can you guess how it gets its name? Our September Tree of the Month is easily spotted thanks to the tough, "shaggy" strips and swirls of bark that make up its trunk! The Shagbark Hickory is native to most of Iowa and provides food and shelter to all sorts of wildlife and pollinators! Its wood is used for tool handles because of its exceptional strength and shock resistance! The Forestry Division gave away a thousand of these unique trees last year for the Tiny Trees Giveaway, so we're hoping to see a "shaggier" Des Moines in a few years!
