With co-chair Robyn Murphy presiding the Educational Affairs Committee convened in person and via video conferencing on Tuesday, September 16. The meeting began with CSD Assistant Superintendent ShaVon Savage unveiling this year’s meeting topics. Topics are aligned to the natural cadence of the school year. This year’s topics are more aligned and structured to enable receipt and incorporation of feedback from stakeholders. Next, Savage introduced the district instructional framework, remarking that an instructional framework is a common language and understanding of what effective teaching and learning looks and sounds like. Savage also spoke to the district assessment philosophy and calendar, so parents/guardians are clear on what assessments are given, when and why.
Finally, CSD Director of School Services Charlene Collins presented on the district’s Federal programs. This year, Cheltenham and Myers Elementaries and Cheltenham High School are Title I schools, meaning students in those schools will receive targeted assistance. CSD’s Title I budget this year is more than $814K. Cheltenham and Myers Elementaries fall under Title II, which is a supplemental educational program that provides financial assistance to improve the skills of teachers and the quality of instruction in core academic subjects in public and private elementary and secondary schools. The district’s Title II budget this year is $135K. The district’s Title III budget allocation this year is $26K, and will be put toward English language learners and immigrant students to learn English and meet academic standards. The district’s Title IV budget is $56K which is being transferred to Title II. Title IV helps improve students’ academic achievement by increasing the capacity of states, local educational agencies, schools and local communities to provide all students with access to a well-rounded education and to improve school conditions for student learning. The next Educational Affairs Committee meeting is Tuesday, October 21 at 7 p.m.
