Committee members discussed a draft statewide plastics monitoring strategy, validation of an EPA predictive model for trash risk using Central Coast observations, and options for monitoring single-use plastic bans and trash capture devices. Participants weighed how predictive models might guide but not replace field monitoring, agreed to consider contributing data to EPAs "Trash Free Waters" network, and heard results from large-scale field studies including a Pacific Crest Trail transect and cigarette-waste reaccumulation research. Multiple follow-ups were proposed, including a volunteer point of contact to register interest in the national effort and suggested protocols for pre/post assessments at cities with full trash-capture systems.
