North Carolina State Superintendent Moe Greene visited Swain County to present the Department of Public Instructions strategic plan, Achieving Educational Excellence. Greene outlined three major goals (high academic achievement, character development and making North Carolina the nations best public-education system by 2030), cited statewide metrics and funding gaps, and described eight pillars and 110 actions to launch over the next 4.5 years. Swain County Superintendent Mark Sale described local alignment with the plan, saying Swain County Schools report a 92% graduation rate and highlighted local efforts such as participation in a Golden Leaf Foundation grant and Accelerated Reader. The event included student introductions, local music, and a community pledge to be champions of public education.
