The Board of Behavioral Sciences Workforce Development Committee met on Oct. 24, 2025, to begin a multi-meeting review of education and remediation requirements for licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT). Staff presented comparisons of California requirements with Oregon, Ohio and Texas and an overview of COAMFT and CACREP (CACREP/KCREP) accreditation standards. Committee staff proposed a draft framework to consolidate and clarify qualifying degree content, practicum expectations, remediation rules and legacy provisions; public commenters (educators, program representatives and clinicians) urged care on accreditation recognition, remediation limits, program approval/auditing, and adding targeted content (for example, perinatal mental health and school-based sequencing). The committee approved the July 31, 2025 minutes; no final policy changes were adopted and staff will return with more detailed draft language and subject-matter expert input.
