Columbia County Water Utility presented a briefing on a new ultraviolet advanced oxidation (UV AOP) treatment system intended to reduce algae-related taste and odor problems and to address emerging contaminants. Utility staff said the system — installed at the Jim Blanchard and Clarks Hill facilities — will run biweekly testing during startup and treat up to 24 million gallons per day on one side and 12 million on the other. Staff said the technology should reduce seasonal taste-and-odor events beginning next year.
