The Canutillo ISD Board of Trustees meeting included presentations on district literacy and math goals, a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) annual report with a proposed nicotine/vape awareness program, the districts Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) results, debate over posting donated Ten Commandments posters under recently enacted state law, and approvals of guaranteed maximum prices (GMPs) for two middle-school construction projects. Staff described steps to implement high-quality instructional materials (Wonders/Maravillas and STEMscopes), called out mixed results in early literacy and secondary outcomes, and outlined supports and partnerships for dual-language instruction. The districts FIRST rating dropped from prior "superior" ratings to "above standard" largely because of lower days cash on hand and an operating deficit for FY24. The board approved GMP early packages for two middle-school projects and handled consent agenda items; it asked administration to continue negotiations with El Paso County about a possible property sale.
