Chair Ed Driggs called the January 20, 2026 zoning meeting to order and opened with roll call and introductions of council members and key staff. He said he was presiding in his capacity as District 7 council member and chair of the transportation, planning and development committee. Introductions included Council Members Renee Johnson (Dist. 4), JD Mazueira Arias (Dist. 5), Luana Mayfield (at-large), Kimberly Owens (Dist. 6), Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell, City Manager Marcus Jones and staff.
Charlotte City Council zoning meeting (Jan. 20, 2026) covered a rollout of a new staff rezoning analysis, multiple consent and non-consent rezoning decisions, and extended hearings on several contested rezoning petitions including affordable senior housing in East Charlotte and large townhome proposals in the Mallard Creek area. Council voted to defer a set of items, approved the consent agenda, and held detailed public testimony and back-and-forth about traffic, stormwater and affordable-housing conditions.
