The Maine Legislature ommittee held public hearings on LD 2121, a bill to remove certain home addresses and personal information of judges and elected officials from designated public records, and LD 2059, an emergency funding bill to cover a shortfall for reimbursement of assigned counsel and to develop a Public Defender Office in Cumberland County. Committee members heard extensive testimony from sponsors, judicial branch representatives, the secretary of state, the Maine Commission on Public Defense Services and dozens of practitioners and advocates before moving to committee business on clarifying PDS payment responsibilities and draft committee bills.
