The Supreme Court of Alabama heard oral arguments in two matters: Ex parte Antonio Spencer, addressing whether the Habitual Felony Offender Act or the pharmacy robbery penalty controls parole eligibility for a life sentence; and The New York Times Co. v. Kai Spears, a certified-question case over the scope of Alabama's reporter shield statute and what information is protected. Both cases were taken under submission.
