A South Carolina Senate child welfare subcommittee heard testimony for and against Senate Bill 540, which would add language to state child-abuse law protecting parental actions taken to raise a child "consistent with the child's [gender identity]." Witnesses including pediatricians, clergy, foster parents and lawyers warned the change could block abuse findings and limit courts' ability to protect children. The subcommittee voted 3–2 to give the bill a favorable report.
