Board member Carla Grigo, chairing the Curriculum & Instruction Committee, opened the meeting, greeted the audience and framed the committee's mission: ensuring students — especially vulnerable populations — see themselves reflected in curriculum, instruction and school culture. She recognized Ramadan and Lunar New Year and said the committee will produce recommendations for the board and staff.
The Los Angeles Unified Curriculum & Instruction Committee heard presentations from teachers, students and district staff about uplifting Black and Muslim identity, history and joy in classrooms. Presenters recommended district-level Ramadan guidance, more accessible culturally relevant materials, dedicated prayer spaces, paid professional learning and targeted mental-health supports. The committee asked staff to turn these suggestions into actionable recommendations.
