A judiciary committee hearing on Senate Bill 256, which would consolidate the Civil and Criminal District Court clerks in Orleans Parish into a single Orleans Parish Clerk of Court, produced heated questioning about timing, constitutionality and costs and drew large public opposition including the clerk-elect Calvin Duncan and dozens of New Orleans residents and civil-rights groups. The committee ultimately voted the bill out of committee.
