South Gate is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located approximately 7 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 92,726, making it the 19th largest city in the county. Known as the "Azalea City" since 1965, South Gate offers a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas within its 7.4 square miles. South Gate's economy is supported by a diverse range of industries, with manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation/warehousing being major employment sectors. The city benefits from its strategic location near major transportation routes, including the 710 and 105 Freeways, as well as its proximity to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This advantageous position makes it a hub for regional, national, and global transportation and trade. South Gate has a rich history, evolving from an agricultural community to a major industrial center in the mid-20th century.
