cityBenton Harbor is a city in Berrien County, Michigan, situated near the mouth of the St. Joseph River and inland from Lake Michigan. The city had a population of 9,103 in 2020, but recent estimates suggest a slight decline to around 8,726 residents in 2026. Today, major employment sectors include healthcare, manufacturing, and accommodation and food services. Key institutions and employers are located in the broader Niles–Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is working to improve its infrastructure and attract new investments to support economic growth. Benton Harbor's history is tied to its location as a port city and its role in the fruit belt of Michigan. The city was founded on swampland that was drained by a canal, giving it the "harbor" in its name. The House of David, a religious group that once operated an amusement park, also contributed to the city's unique past. Today, Benton Harbor is focusing on leveraging its natural resources and cultural assets to create a more vibrant community.
