The borough had a population of 14,044 at the 2020 census, with a 2026 population estimated at 14,430. Indiana is the principal city of the Indiana, Pennsylvania micropolitan area and part of the greater Pittsburgh–New Castle–Weirton combined statistical area. The borough is known as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World" due to the founding of the National Christmas Tree Growers Association there, and Christmas tree farms remain prevalent in the area. Indiana's economy is supported by diverse sectors, including energy, manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and tourism. Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is the largest employer in the borough. The town serves as a regional center of business and commerce with a historic downtown district. Indiana is also known as the birthplace of actor Jimmy Stewart, and the Jimmy Stewart Museum is a popular attraction. The borough was founded in 1805 and named after Indiana County, which in turn was named after the "Indiana grant" of the First Treaty of Fort Stanwix. Indiana County's parks and trails system is one of the best in Pennsylvania with over 69 miles of rails to trails.
