The City of Commerce is located in southeastern Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,378. Known as the "City of Commerce" to distinguish it from the common noun, it is a primarily industrial city with a small-town ambiance. Commerce is bordered by Vernon, Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, Montebello, Downey, Bell Gardens, and Maywood. Commerce has a diverse economy with industry accounting for over 60% of the city's land area. Key sectors include manufacturing, goods distribution, high technology, office space, warehouse facilities, and retail. The city is home to the Citadel Outlets, a major regional shopping destination, and the Commerce Casino, one of the largest card rooms in the world. Commerce incorporated in 1960 to protect its industrial land from annexation by neighboring cities. This strategic move allowed the city to maintain a low-tax, pro-business environment. The city provides a range of services to residents, including free bus service, multiple libraries, a senior center, and recreational facilities.
