Athens, Georgia, also known as the "Classic City," is located in the northeastern part of the state, approximately 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. As of 2026, Athens has an estimated population of 129,417. Athens is known as a vibrant college town, primarily due to being the home of the University of Georgia (UGA), the state's flagship public university. The University of Georgia and its affiliated health system are major economic drivers in Athens, along with government agencies, technology and entrepreneurship, tourism and hospitality, and manufacturing. UGA is a major employer and research institution, administering over $300 million annually in research awards. The city has a diverse and growing economy with a focus on translating job growth into median wage gains through skilled positions. Athens is distinctive for its blend of traditional heritage and trend-setting Southern culture. The city has preserved many of its historic neighborhoods and landmarks, and its downtown area features a vibrant music scene. Athens is also known for its antebellum architecture and is a stop on Georgia's Antebellum Trail.
