Commission endorses Option A for Old Middleton Road underpass design
Sep 17, 2026
The commission recommended staff's Option A geometry for a new 10‑ft shared‑use underpass beneath the railroad that connects University Crossing to Old Middleton Road; staff noted design compromises with the railroad and operational preferences for snow removal and sightlines.
The full story
City street designer Gracia Esquierdo presented two geometry options for the Old Middleton Road underpass and asked the commission to recommend a preferred alignment. The project would build a new pedestrian/bike underpass under the railroad, extend the University Crossing bike path, add sidewalk and lighting, and remove a legacy mid‑block crossing. Staff recommended Option A, noting the railroad negotiated a 10‑ft structure width and that Option A drew public and operations support because it avoids a tight U‑turn that could be problematic for snow removal and maintenance.
