Commissioners flag SNAP changes and pressure on food pantries

GR staff reported early evidence that changes to SNAP administration are reducing benefit take-up and increasing strain on local food pantries; commissioners asked GR to monitor and pursue state-level responses.

GR staff told the board that federal and state SNAP adjustments are already producing local effects: a noted decline in people accessing food benefits has increased pressure on food pantries. "We were seeing a drop in individuals accessing food benefits... folks were opting out before they were officially removed from the benefit," GR said.
