Subcommittee presents Davis conservation 'heat‑map'; commission backs sending analysis to General Plan Committee

Sep 18, 2026

A subcommittee reported a GIS‑based conservation priority map for the Davis planning area that stacks farmland, conservation priorities, floodplains, creeks, and species occurrence data; commissioners voted to forward the report and suggested clearer interpretation captions for non‑specialist audiences.

The full story

Commission Chair (speaker 3) and subcommittee members reported on a multi‑layer GIS analysis intended to show where conservation and habitat values overlap across the Davis planning area. The subcommittee combined layers—important farmland, conservation priority areas, FEMA 100‑ and 500‑year floodplains, buffered creeks and waterways, drainage basins, existing preserved lands, and California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) occurrence centroids—to generate a heat‑map highlighting candidate areas for future protection. The Chair explained they "identified the habitat or the yeah, the conservation habitat values that you see in the report" and said the map will be presented to the General Plan subcommittee with recommended next steps.
