Resident raises records-retention concerns over digitization

During public comment, resident John Leonard asked whether the village’s digitization program preserves original records and complies with state retention rules, warning that improper handling could be a misdemeanor; the council president said staff are following state protocol.

John Leonard, a resident, told the council during the public-comment period that he was concerned the village was digitizing all records and that originals required by state law might not be preserved. "Is everything being digitized? ... are we following the rules and regulations outlined by the state that you have to maintain the original copies," Leonard asked, adding that some documents "need to be... reserved forever" and that failure to follow retention rules "could be a misdemeanor against the village."
