Committee backs resolution to prepare for PFAS-free firefighter turnout gear

The committee moved a resolution to full council directing city staff to monitor PFAS-free turnout gear technology and establish a PFAS Replacement Sub Fund to save one-time underspend for a future wholesale transition once safe alternatives are proven.

Councilor Zimmerman and Portland Fire Chief Lauren Johnson asked the City Life Committee to authorize a path for Portland Fire & Rescue to transition to PFAS-free turnout gear once commercially viable, safe alternatives are available. Chief Johnson said PFAS historically provided durable water repellency in turnout gear but is associated with occupational exposures linked to elevated cancer risk for firefighters.
