Teacher urges board to create middle-school temporary learning environment for students with high needs

A middle-school teacher described recent serious incidents and asked the board to create a structured interim program so students with more intensive behavioral and social needs can receive targeted supports and return to mainstream classes.

Mariana Garcia, a teacher at the middle school, urged the board to consider developing a middle-school based temporary learning environment for students whose academic, behavioral, and social needs exceed what the regular classroom can provide. Garcia said staff currently manage multiple simultaneous incidents and that limited placement options (about five spots) are insufficient to meet demand.
